Green Chemistry Centers advance green chemistry education

In just two years 20 universities have become members of this important initiative

Universities create an alliance committed to share knowledge between experts in the field of green chemistry.

The Global Green Chemistry Centers (G2C2) advances global green chemistry education, public outreach, and decision making for a sustainable 21st Century.

I just returned from their 3rd annual conference at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, which has the bragging rights for creating the first PhD in Green Chemistry.

The global conference provided:

  • An opportunity to learn about research in green chemistry at universities.
  • Examples of how industry is implementing green chemistry, which includes green chemistry education.
  • An avenue to collaborate and share best practices to accelerate the adoption of green chemistry by academia and industry.

I was particularly impressed to see how many organizations are creating connections and networks that act as enablers for green chemistry including:

The Green Chemistry & Commerce Council (GC3)

GC3 is building an innovation portal that connects people, organizations, and academia to facilitate collaboration and solutions utilizing green chemistry. It connects seekers to solvers and provides a great visual representation of the actors who are engaged in the system.

Beyond Benign – A focus in green chemistry education

An NGO dedicated to integrate green chemistry in all levels of education, Beyond Benign is the supporting organization of the Green Chemistry Commitment. This initiative for higher education is designed to:

  1. Prepare chemists whose skills align with the needs of the planet and its inhabitants in the 21st century.
  2. Develop world-class chemists who design and develop innovative, efficient, and environmentally sound solutions to the safety and effectiveness of chemical products and processes.

NESSE – promoting green chemistry education

The Network for Early Career Sustainable Scientists, (NESSE) is a new generation of scientists and engineers that use collaborative and green approaches to science and technology to achieve a prosperous and sustainable future. NESSE’s strategic priorities include supporting sustainable science groups and sharing their stories to increase awareness and forge collaborations.

I didn’t even share any of the cutting edge research that was presented at the conference. Perhaps in another blog post.

Impact to your business

Questions to Consider:

  • Does your company need to hire a scientist trained in green chemistry and sustainable design?
  • Does your company work with, and track research collaborations such as these?
